Libraries are the heart of communities, providing access to books, knowledge, and resources for all. However, the lifeblood of many libraries is their partnership with Friends of the Library organizations. One of the primary ways these groups support libraries is by expanding collections—ensuring that patrons have access to a wide variety of books, media, and educational materials that reflect the interests and needs of the community. In this blog, we will explore how Friends of the Library help enrich library collections and play a crucial role in offering diverse and extensive resources to patrons.

Fundraising for New Collections

One of the key ways Friends of the Library groups contribute is through fundraising, which directly supports expanding the library’s collections. Many libraries operate on tight budgets, and often, they rely on Friends of the Library to provide additional funds to purchase new materials. Through book sales, donation drives, and special fundraising events, Friends organizations raise the necessary capital to bring fresh and relevant titles into the library.

This expanded budget allows libraries to offer a diverse range of new books—from the latest bestsellers and nonfiction titles to more specialized genres and scholarly works. Without the fundraising efforts of these groups, many libraries would struggle to keep their collections current and varied, reducing access to high-demand books or niche interests.

Filling Gaps in Specialized Collections

In addition to general collection expansion, Friends of the Library groups often work with librarians to identify gaps in the library’s offerings and fund acquisitions to fill them. This can include specialized collections, such as books in foreign languages, local history, graphic novels, or rare archival materials that might otherwise be out of reach. These contributions help libraries serve niche interests and demographics in the community that might not be well-represented in the general collection.

For example, if a library wants to expand its offerings in areas like environmental science, art history, or books by underrepresented authors, Friends of the Library groups can raise money specifically for these acquisitions, ensuring that every patron finds something to suit their interests.

Building Up Local Author Collections

Many Friends of the Library organizations also focus on supporting local authors by helping libraries build dedicated local author collections. These collections feature books by writers from the surrounding area, showcasing regional talent and connecting the community with its literary voices. Friends of the Library might organize local author events, and with funds raised, they can purchase additional copies of books by local authors to ensure they have a prominent place on the library’s shelves.

Not only does this support local literary culture, but it also provides library patrons with the opportunity to explore new voices and discover stories that resonate with their community's unique identity.

Sponsoring "Library of Things" Collections

Friends of the Library groups are also responsible for expanding non-traditional collections. These allow patrons to access non-book items, such as musical instruments, tools, gardening equipment, board games, or technology kits. By providing funding for these collections, Friends groups help libraries expand their role as resource hubs, offering tools and items that can be expensive or hard to come by.

Friends of the Library organizations are instrumental in expanding library collections, ensuring that libraries can offer an ever-growing variety of books, digital content, and even non-traditional resources like tools or local author works. Their efforts enrich the experience for patrons of all ages, keeping libraries dynamic, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of the community.
